PGNAETA is seeking a motivated individual for the position of Head of Finance as an interim measure for the period of one (1) year.  We are looking for someone with a positive attitude, who shows initiative and works well independently as well as in a team environment.


The mission of the Finance Department is to efficiently provide compliant, accurate and timely financial reporting and further, to accurately account for every financial transaction in the general ledger of the Association.  Under the direction of the Executive Director and by working with the Finance/accounting team, the Head of Finance will work to deliver accurate and timely reporting for the Board of Directors and to Federal and Provincial government standards.  The Head of Finance will be responsible for full-cycle accounting for a portfolio consisting of multi level contractual agreements.  The ideal candidate will be detailed, accurate and diligent at organizing their time and work requirements.  The candidate will have both knowledge and experience with accounting for the non-profit sector.

The Role:

As the Head of Finance you will lead the team to provide historical financial information to comply with non-profit regulatory requirements, provide historical financial information to comply with financing and government requirements, facilitate an efficient audit with a faborable audit opinion, govern the financial data that builds our financial reporting, ensure accounting records are accurate and complete, ensure entity level financial statements are accurate and complete and work with the Executive Director to seamlessly lead the day-to-day function of the department in support of Association objectives.

Job Duties & Responsibility:

  • Maintain and take ownership of full cycle accounting on an assigned portfolio of contract agreements and sub-agreements.  This includes A/R, A/P and all journal entries and bank reconciliations
  • Prepare and submit accurate regular financial statements for assigned portfolio and accurate regular payroll statements
  • Prepare and submit GST and WCB reports on schedule, and tax preparations as required
  • Conduct audits to ensure adherence to statutory and regulatory requirements
  • Review and maintain internal control processes and systems and accounting controls by following policies and procedures for non-profit accounting and recommending improvements when possible
  • Comply with federal, provincial and local financial requirements, advising management on an exposures or liabilities

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree, Accounting or Finance required, CPA designation or in progress
  • 3+ years of progressive professional accounting and/or finance experience in non-profits
  • Effective attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize work by deadlines
  • Proficient with financial management software (MS Excel, Paydirt, Adagio, MS Office and Word)
  • Must have excellent communication skills and business acumen
  • Must have knowledge of Indigenous peoples within the region served by PGNAETA
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality and accountability
  • Strong work ethic and positive team attitude
